This traditional Valentine’s Day flower is a symbol of love and beauty. The rose is available in solid colors and bicolor varieties, and there are striped roses and tipped roses as well. Many available year-round and that are surprisingly affordable. And though roses are associated with luxurious fragrance, not every rose is scented. Brides frequently choose roses for their weddings due to their variety. Three main types are likely candidates for your wedding flowers: hybrid tea rose, spray rose and garden rose.

Calla Lily

This elegant trumpet-shaped blossom symbolizes “magnificent beauty” in the language of flowers. Two types are commonly available: a large-headed variety with a long, smooth stem and suitable for tall arrangements or presentation-style bouquets, and a miniature version ideal for nosegays and boutonnieres. Creamy ivory is the most popular color, but calla lilies also come in yellow, orange, mauve-pink, and dark purple.

Tulips

Tulips are a meaningful wedding flower choice as they represent “happy years” and “consuming love”. Although most people are familiar with white tulips, they can be found in a range of colors such as red, pink, yellow and peach; and vibrant hues like magenta, red, and purple. Three main varieties are commonly used: Dutch tulips, French tulips and parrot tulips. Available during much of the year, the most common tulips are very affordable, though rare varieties can be expensive. If you’re looking for elegant flowers for your wedding day then tulips are a great choice.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are a good choice if you’re trying to break away from traditionally used wedding flowers. The big bushy heads and intense colors of these flowers make them ideal for weddings with vibrant colors. The hydrangea represented “vanity” in the Victorian language of flowers. A stem or two of this moderately priced, scentless shrub flower helps fill out arrangements and bouquets, and a few sprigs make a charming boutonniere. You can find the hydrangea in white and shades of green, pink, burgundy, and blue.

Lily of the Valley

With bell-shape florets dangling from a thin stem, make it easy to hang them onto centerpieces. Lily of the valley is sometimes called “the ladder to heaven.” Most people know of the white variety, but lily of the valley also comes in a very rare rosy-pink. The flower is linked to Ostara, the goddess of springtime in Norse mythology, and while most plentiful during this season, it remains available but very expensive, most of the year. A more affordable alternative may be to use just a few stems to infuse a bouquet.

Peonies

Peonies acquired the Victorian meaning “bashfulness” due to their strong scent and bright colors. There are two types of Peony – the herbaceous and the tree peony. A bouquet made solely of peonies can be gorgeous; the flower can also be used to create beautiful centerpieces and arrangements. If you are thinking of getting tree peonies for your wedding day, remember that they do not last long when they have been cut. This expensive bloom is seasonally available from late spring to early summer but can be imported in the fall.

These dainty white flowers are a great wedding choice. The Victorian meaning for this flower is “marital happiness”. These star-shaped flowers are the most popular choice for bridal bouquets. A bouquet of stephanotis blossoms is one of the most traditional a bride can carry, and a stephanotis boutonniere is a classic choice for a formal wedding. They are available throughout the year and they are moderately priced.

Sweet Peas

Sweet peas are traditional wedding flowers in England and they signify “lasting pleasure”. Their scent is strong and sweet and they are available in a wide range of colors from white to intense pinks and purples. Make this an old-fashioned favorite in bouquets for the bride and her bridesmaids.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus is a more affordable alternative to roses or other popular wedding flowers. To carry ranunculus is to tell your partner, in the Victorian language of flowers, “I am dazzled by your charms.” This mild-scented flower features several blossoms on a stem with fernlike foliage. These dazzling flowers are frequently used in bridal bouquets or bridesmaid nosegays and are available in many colors including white, yellow, orange, and pink.

The Gardenia

Surrounded by dark green, waxy leaves, the exquisite gardenia exudes a sultry, heavy scent. These exquisite flowers have a sultry, heavy scent. These flowers are a good idea for centerpieces and a single gardenia makes a great corsage. Gardenias are lovely tucked into a bouquet or floating in a low bowl as a centerpiece, and a single gardenia makes a wonderful scented corsage. But the delicate, creamy ivory petals of this expensive flower can bruise easily. Large three- to four-inch blossoms, as well as a miniature variety, are available.
